A lot of yards in Madelia deal with sloped or uneven ground near the street. Without something solid holding that grade back, you end up with erosion, shifting soil, and a front yard that just looks rough. That's exactly the kind of problem a well-built retaining wall solves - and it solves it for good.
On this job, we installed a multi-run block retaining wall using dark charcoal concrete landscape block. The wall runs along the front of the property and steps down in elevation toward the driveway. Getting that transition right takes planning. The blocks have to be set level, properly backfilled, and the corners have to be tight. No shortcuts there.
We also set large natural-textured concrete steps coming off the walkway. Those steps are heavy, wide, and built to last. The chiseled face on them gives a natural stone look without the unpredictability of actual fieldstone. They sit flush against the block wall, which ties the whole front yard together visually.
After the wall and steps were done, we seeded the disturbed soil areas and covered them with straw netting. That's the right way to finish a job like this - bare soil left without cover will wash and erode before the grass has any chance to establish. The netting holds the straw and seed in place until the roots take hold.
Work like this is as much about function as it is appearance. A retaining wall that's built right doesn't move, doesn't lean, and doesn't need to be redone in a few years. We take that seriously on every project we do around Madelia and the surrounding area.
